Brain storming is a method of creating ideas where a group of people sit down and make random suggestions, writing down everything that comes into their heads. The theory is that this should result in creative ideas, and lots of them.

Blame storming is quite similar, but more specific. Blame storming is a method of collectively finding someone to blame for a mistake that no one is willing to confess to.

Couple kissing
A rich experience, or just a bunch of chemicals?

Wednesday, 7 January 2009

By Pallab Ghosh
BBC News science correspondent

It is said that love is a drug. But is it just a drug?

That is the contention of Larry Young, a professor of neuroscience at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

Writing in the respected scientific journal Nature, Professor Young argues that love can be explained by a series of neurochemical events in specific brain areas.

If it is true, he says, people will no longer have to rely on oysters or chocolates to create a loving mood.

Instead, it will be possible for scientists to develop aphrodisiacs - chemicals that would make people fall in love with the first person they see.

And for those who have fallen in love with someone they shouldn't have, there could be an antidote to unrequited love.

There is even the prospect of a genetic "love test" to assess whether two potential love-birds are predisposed to a happy married life.

It seems like a trend to study MBA and has been popular for a long time.WHY ?

For social responsibilities.

When it came to the crunch, MBAs didn't help

  • The Observer, Sunday 26 October 2008
  • Article history

It's not just in finance that the inquests have begun. What part have the business schools and business academics played in the implosion of the world's banking system? That was the question posed in a letter to the Financial Times last week by Nottingham University Business School's Professor Ken Starkey.

Hedge funds, private equity, investment banking, venture capital and consulting - the high priesthood of financial capitalism - were overwhelmingly MBAs' preferred job destinations, he noted. Now the schools needed to 'reflect on the role of the MBA and MBAs in the carnage of Wall Street' and consider 'how management education has contributed to the mindset that has led to the excesses of the last two decades'.

This isn't the first time that theory and theorists have been called into question. Three years ago the London Business School's late Sumantra Ghoshal caused a furore by writing that business schools did not need to do a lot more to prevent the emergence of future Enrons; they just needed to stop doing a good deal of what they were doing already.

TWO earlier books by Malcolm Gladwell, "The Tipping Point" and "Blink", were more than just bestsellers: they became compulsory reading for the intellectually fashionable. Journalists and politicians, in particular, loved Mr Gladwell's concept of the tipping point, the moment when a trend flips into irreversible change, because it lends the power of apparent inevitability to almost any argument.

In his latest book, "Outliers", Mr Gladwell employs many of the techniques that made the other two so engaging. To illustrate a "big idea" that appears to challenge conventional thinking, he deploys a series of well-told anecdotes that combine seamlessly with popularised accounts of relevant academic research and case studies. This time the stories remain as intriguing as ever, but Mr Gladwell's "big idea" (or ideas, as there are actually two in this book) is unlikely to take even the least reflective reader by surprise. His main theme is that great success is hardly ever solely the result of extraordinary innate talent but of other factors, such as luck, accidents of timing, exceptional opportunity and an appetite for plain hard work. The other is that we are all of us, for better or worse, products of our cultural background.
